The news that runs a little wide

Red flag in Mexico for a piece of bodywork, the heated room takes note

In second free practice in Mexico, Max Verstappen (Red Bull) and Liam Lawson (Racing Bulls) made contact. Bodywork debris brought out a red flag; the incident has been noted by the stewards and may still be examined.

Josiane in orange on a camping chair holds a piece of bodywork and a red flag while a heated room watches from afar.

End-of-day report. Post 14, received.

Subject: second free practice session, Mexico. I wasn’t there. I read about it the next day, at the kitchen table in Stavelot (near the circuit), the post file open at the red flags page.

Observation. One car wants to pass another. The other leaves its car where it is. At the next corner, the first leaves its car where it is in turn. Contact. Part of the bodywork stays on the asphalt. I name no one. I wave the flag. I don’t judge.

Flag shown: red. Reason: debris on the track. A piece of bodywork on the asphalt is not up for discussion, it gets picked up. The marshals removed it. That is all the source says. The rest I know: it’s the job.

Radio. One of the two drivers reacted. According to RacingNews365, he said: “Mate, he just drove into me. He drives into me every weekend!” I am transcribing. The exclamation mark is his. The post radio doesn’t have one.

Decision. The heated room has noted the incident. It may still be examined. Noted is the first word of the procedure. At the post, after noted, there is the thermos, then the sandwich, then we see. I don’t time my colleagues.

Your correspondent observes that “noted”, in the language of the stewards, is a word waiting for its second paragraph.

Next. The session resumed after the interruption. Free practice. Nothing counts there, except the bodywork, which did count, since it was on the ground.

Nothing further to report.

It’s true, we checked: RacingNews365.
