Cooling vest outside the cost cap: Philippeville launches its wet-towel programme

George Russell admitted he got it wrong the week before: the cooling vest allowed in Singapore, declared a “heat hazard” by the FIA, is excluded from the cost cap. Mercedes, though, could not devote the resources needed to develop an effective version for its 2026 car.

PRESS RELEASE.

Fabienne Racing has taken note, via The Race, of the clarification made by George Russell: the cooling vest is excluded from the cost cap. The driver says he got this wrong the week before. The team salutes a driver who corrects his own figures in public. It’s rare, and with us it happens on Mondays, on Facebook.

The team notes that Mercedes could not devote the resources needed to develop an effective version of the vest for its 2026 car. Fabienne Racing understands. It too has to allocate its resources, between two sets of tyres and the Dacia’s fuel.

“Outside the cap means you can spend without counting,” says the team principal. “We don’t count either. We have nothing to count. So our cooling programme is under way: a wet towel, the gazebo, and my brother-in-law’s garage for the pump.”

Fabienne Racing notes that Williams appears to be the best team on this development, and that Carlos Sainz sees it as the best thing the team has done this year. The team respects an outfit that owns its strong point. Alex Albon says the system made driving “fairly comfortable” until his car retired after 41 laps in Malaysia.

“Florian is ready to test any vest,” the team principal explains. “He always has been. He is available on Mondays, the day our title partner is closed.”

Your correspondent notes that the cap, too, now has its air-conditioned exceptions.
