The news that runs a little wide

Sepang’s P2 becomes pole: Florian is ready on both sides of the straight

At Sepang, the pole position slot had been painted on the left instead of the right, following poor communication in the documentation. The former P2 slot became pole, the other slots were renumbered and the whole grid repainted before the inspection.

Fabienne holds a paint roller on a repainted starting grid, the pole box erased on the left and redrawn on the right.

PRESS RELEASE.

Fabienne Racing has taken note of the work carried out on the starting grid at the Sepang International Circuit, where the FIA had to step in at the last minute. The pole position slot had been painted on the left of the straight, when it normally sits on the right. The track staff had followed the instructions; several sources point to poor communication in the documentation supplied to the circuit.

The team notes with interest that the slot first designated as P2 is now the pole position, and that all the other slots have been renumbered. “That’s a seat opening up,” says the team principal. “And a whole grid that changes numbers without lifting a finger. At Fabienne Racing, we call that a project.”

Fabienne Racing wishes to reassure its partners about its own infrastructure. The marking of the gazebo at Mariembourg, the Walloon karting circuit, is done in chalk by the brother-in-law’s garage, our technical partner, and checked twice before the trailer is unloaded. “We maximised our package,” the team principal explains. “The package is a piece of chalk and a tape measure.”

The team salutes the work of the FIA officials, who spotted the error during their checks. The initial markings were then covered over, the entire grid repainted and the start line moved to guarantee correct timing. The work was finished on Thursday and the circuit approved at the inspection ahead of the race weekend.

Florian is ready to start from either side of the straight. He always has been.

Your correspondent has known grids that did not move a single centimetre. At Sepang, they repaint, and very good too.
